Infertility is a delicate subject for both men and women. When you and your significant other want to conceive a child, it’s important to go through extensive testing to ensure there are no issues present that might make it more difficult to have a baby. While most Americans believe that the woman is the primary cause of infertility, in many cases the problem stems from a male health issue. The following are common causes of infertility in men:
Infection
A variety of infections can cause infertility in males when scarring occurs that blocks the passageway for sperm, or when the infection affects the actual production itself. Some of the more common infections include chlamydia, gonorrhea, mumps and inflammation of the prostate. While many instances may cause permanent damage to the testicular area, it is very common for sperm to be retrieved for reproduction when necessary.
Erectile Dysfunction
The inability to ejaculate or have an erection is a common cause of infertility among men. Whether the dysfunction is caused by psychological issues, extreme stress or low self-esteem, a doctor can offer useful advice about treatment. Heart disease, diabetes and weight issues can also cause erectile dysfunction. In these cases, a healthy diet and regular exercise can help increase energy and decrease any type of risk.
Tumors
Tumors can have a direct and indirect affect on male reproduction. The pituitary gland, which is the main gland that releases hormones for reproduction, can be damaged from tumors and a variety of other cancers. When a man is treated for cancer with chemotherapy or surgery, the prostate and other organs that are involved in the reproductive process can incur irreversible damage as well.
Cigarette Smoke
Those who smoke cigarettes often have a lower sperm count than men who don’t. If someone has been told by a doctor that their sperm count is too low because of smoking cigarettes, they can reverse the problem by kicking the habit. Second-hand smoke has also been known to reduce sperm count. If you plan on having children in the near future, stay away from people who smoke on a regular basis.
Excessive Regular Exercise
While exercise is good for overall health and weight loss, too much exercise can have a negative impact on male fertility. Over time, heavy exercise can cause your body to release too many steroidal hormones, which may negatively impact fertility. Cut down the amount of exercising you do on a regular basis if you want to conceive a child.
Excessive Heat
Heat can play a major part in male infertility. Extreme heat issues can be caused by wearing pants that are too tight on a regular basis, participating in too many sauna sessions, sitting in hot baths for long periods of time or excessive bike riding on a daily basis. Excessive heat can only be a temporary issue. Cut down on some of the main causes if you think heat might be causing a reduction in sperm count.
Radiation Problems
Exposure to radiation over a long period of time can cause a temporary reduction in sperm count. Whether you work at a job that requires you to be in close proximity to radiation or you work extensively with x-rays or have received a large amount x-ray exams for medical reasons, these problems can be reversed over time by staying away from any type of radiation.
